After a strong performance in Saturday's 4-0 win over Concordia Wisconsin, Centre Field Hockey looked for a weekend sweep at the expense of Marian on Sunday. The game was tight throughout and needed more than 60 minutes to play, but it was Marian that came out on top in a 3-2 overtime win.
The Sabres tested Centre goalie,
Eliza Hensley, just 46 seconds into the game, but she was up to the task and knocked the shot away. Hensley stopped another try in close off a penalty corner in the 5th minute. Centre's only go on goal came right at the horn as
Emily Ritchie's last-second shot was denied and the game was scoreless after 1.
Centre broke the ice in the 21st minute as
Tori Drepaul fed a penalty corner ball into the box, where
Ashley Hamilton was able to fire it to the net to give Centre the 1-0 lead. Marian countered with its own tally in the 28th minute to tie the game at 1 going to halftime.
Marian took the lead in the 3rd quarter with a goal in the 40th minute. Centre came right back as Hamilton was on the spot again to score off
Emily Ritchie's 3rd assist of the weekend.
Claire Martin had 2 shots for the lead in the waning seconds of the quarter but was turned away on both.
The game made its way to overtime.
Tori Drepaul almost had the winner just 1:11 in but her shot was tipped wide just at the last moment by the Marian goalie.
Addie Sheridan made 2 stops in the overtime but could not get to Marian's 3rd try as it reached the goal in the 69th minute for the winner.
Sheridan came on at the start of the 2nd half and tallied 6 saves as the Colonels were outshot 20-8 in total and 12-7 on goal. Marian also finished with a 13-7 edge on penalty corners.
Centre will look for a CFHC bounceback on Saturday as Sewanee comes to Danville. The action gets started at Noon on Homecoming Weekend.
