Centre Field Hockey took on a strong Mary Washington squad at South Turf on Saturday. The Eagles showed their strength on both ends of the field in a 4-0 win over the Centre, dropping the Colonels to 1-3 in the CFHC.
The Colonels had 4th minute chances as an
Emily Ritchie shot would result in a penalty corner, followed by another from
Tori Drepaul, but the Colonels could muster little against the Eagles defense.
Eliza Hensley got the start in goal for the Colonels and tallied her 1st save of the day in the 5th minute. Mary Washington kept the pressure up as the quarter went along and would eventually be rewarded with a goal in the 14th minute to take a lead to the 2nd.
It took the Eagles just 2 minutes, 16 seconds into the 2nd to find the goal again to double its lead over the Colonels. Centre's offense showed life midway through as both
Taylor Fuqua and
Olivia Vonderheide had chances on goal but were denied. Hensley came up with 2 important stops in the final 5 minutes to keep Centre within reach.
Claire Martin had a go on goal in the 26th minute but was also denied as Mary Washington took a 2-0 lead to halftime.
The Eagles put another goal on the board in the 38th minute off a penalty corner to take a 3-goal lead. Less than 2 minutes later, they added a 4th goal.
Claire Martin had 2 late chances in close blocked and cleared out. Those shots proved to be the last of the day for the Colonels as the offense struggled to navigate tight defending, which resulted in the 4-0 final.
Eliza Hensley stopped 3 shots in 3 quarters of action.
Addie Sheridan took over in goal in the 4th but did not face a shot attempt from the Eagles.
Centre will look for a bounce back on Tuesday night as the Colonels head to Lexington to take on Transylvania, starting at 7:00pm.
