Centre dominated the ball for much of the night in the SAA opener at Millsaps. The Colonels put 10 shots on goal to just 2 for the Majors, while accruing a 9-2 edge in corners. The trouble came with putting the ball into the net as the shots just would not go, and thanks to an early Millsaps goal, the Colonels fell 1-0.
Millsaps got the lone goal in the 10th minute of the game to grab the early lead. Centre's defense held the Majors to a single shot on target the rest of the way. The Colonel offense showed its first sign of life in the 15th minute when
Jacob Tyler had a go at goal that was scooped up by the Millsaps keeper. Centre's best early sequence came in the 23rd minute as
Ryan O'Hara and
Amit Shahar took their turns on goal just 20 seconds apart with both coming up empty.
Jack Robson tried on the follow from distance but sailed the ball high and wide.
AJ Daniels and Tyler were the next to have a go in the 28th and 32nd minutes respectively, but they too were denied as Centre trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Shahar had the Colonels' first viable threat in the 2nd half as a shot in the 51st minute was headed jnside the left post, but the Majors keeper pushed it just wide to keep Millsaps in the lead. O'Hara went for the same spot in the 55th minute but faced the same result. He tried for the opposite post in the 71st minute but again was stonewalled.
Gideon Malone had Centre's final chance for the equalizer on foot in the 84th minute but the shot turned into a routine save to finish a frustrating night for the Colonels.
Centre will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon with a matchup at Rhodes. Kickoff from Memphis is set for 3:30pm ET.
