After a dominant shot advantage in Friday's win at Millsaps, Centre Women's Soccer entered Sunday's matinee brimming with confidence and looking for the weekend road sweep. Unfortunately, the script was flipped on Sunday as the Colonels mustered just 2 shots on goal, including a saved penalty kick in the 89th minute. The result was a 1-0 loss to Rhodes.
The Lynx tallied what was to be the only goal of the day early as a shot slipped by
Madeline Redmon for a 3rd minute tally. Centre's first go on goal came on the boot of
Claire Mullen in the 6th minute, but the try sailed high over the bar. Redmon came up with her first save in the 21st minute as Rhodes was looking for a score off a corner kick but was denied. She came up big on another Lynx shot in the 37th minute as both teams struggled to find consistent attacks in the first half.
Defense continued to be the story into the second half as neither team logged a shot attempt until Centre had a try in the 61st minute that came up empty. Redmon made the final 3 of her 5 saves in the final 12 minutes to keep Centre within 1, setting the stage for the moment of the game. The Colonels were brought down in the Rhodes box with just 1:12 remaining, setting up a dramatic late penalty kick.
Alexis Kronenthall had the ball on the spot, but the try was stopped by the Lynx keeper to preserve the Rhodes 1-0 win.
Centre will stay on the road next Saturday as the Colonels travel to San Antonio, TX to take on Trinity with an eye on getting back above .500 in the SAA. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm ET.
