Centre Field Hockey honored seniors
Halle Rigden,
Emily Ritchie and
Claire Martin ahead of Saturday's regular season finale against Rhodes. The trio led a strong Colonel defense all day long, but Rhodes was able to rally and ultimately come away with a 2-1 win in double overtime.
Rhodes earned a penalty corner less than a minute into the game, but Centre's defense was able to clear away the chance without allowing a shot on goal. Both teams played tight defense all day long as the first shot on goal was not registered until just 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Addie Sheridan came up with her first save of the day as the game was scoreless after 1.
Centre's first shot of the game was the right one as in the 21st minute,
Claire Martin found a loose ball in the Lynx box and smacked it home to give the Colonels the lead in her Centre home finale. Sheridan made another critical save just 54 seconds later to deny the Lynx the tie. Rhodes kept the threat though with a penalty corner but the ensuing shot rolled wide of Sheridan. Centre continued to defend tightly and took a 1-0 lead to halftime.
The Colonels controlled the ball and field early in the 3rd.
Emily Ritchie took a penalty corner just 37 seconds in, leading to a shot on goal from
Claire Martin that was turned aside by the Rhodes goalie. Ritchie took another just 3 minutes later. This time,
Ashley Hamilton had a go from distance but was also stopped. Rhodes slowly grabbed momentum later in the quarter. Two shots in 34 seconds inside the 41st minute were stopped by Sheridan, but the pressure kept coming. Off a penalty corner, Rhodes was able to sneak a ball by the Centre goalie to tie the game at 1 with 3:49 to play in the 3rd. The game remained tied through the 4th and into overtime.
In the first overtime and despite the game becoming 7-on-7, neither side tallied a shot on goal until Rhodes did in the 67th minute.
Addie Sheridan was there again to deny the Lynx the game-winner. She tallied another save in the 69th minute, sending the game to double overtime. The pressure from Rhodes proved too much in the end as the Lynx needed just 1:41 of the second overtime to score the winner.
Centre finishes the regular season in 5th place in the CFHC. The conference tournament matchup will be announced soon with the tournament starting on November 6th in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
