Field Hockey falls in CFHC Tourney Opener

Centre Field Hockey entered Thursday's CFHC Tournament opener looking for revenge against Sewanee following a 3-0 defeat to the Tigers in mid-October. The Colonels fought hard and held tough throughout, but a penalty goal in the 4th was enough to send Sewanee to the semifinals with a 3-2 win, thus ending Centre's season.

Eliza Hensley got the start in goal for the Colonels and was put to the test right away as she had to make a save just 1:22 into the game. Following a penalty corner in the 9th minute, Hensley came up clutch again to keep Sewanee off the scoreboard. Centre's lone chance in the first came in the waning seconds as a Claire Martin shot off a penalty corner sailed high as the game went scoreless to the second.

Tori Drepaul, fresh off 2nd Team all-conference honors, made a huge defensive save in the opening minutes of the second to again keep Sewanee from a score. A second chance for the Tigers in the sequence was blocked away by the Colonel D. Drepaul tallied another defensive save in the 25th minute as Sewanee continued to control the possession. Less than 3 minutes later, Sewanee was able to capitalize off another penalty corner to grab a 1-0 lead. It nearly was more in the final seconds of the half, but Eliza Hensley stopped 2 more shots before the horn to keep Centre's margin at 1.

Addie Sheridan took over in goal for the 2nd half and was tested right away. Sewanee drew a penalty corner in the opening minute but could not get a clean look at goal. That changed in the 33rd minute when the Tigers slipped a ball just past Sheridan to take a 2-0 lead. The Sewanee goal proved a wakeup call for Centre as the Colonel offense began to get going. A penalty corner in the 35th minute let to a shot that went just wide. Another chance in the 37th minute from Ashley Hamilton was denied by the Tiger keeper. The advance paid off in the 41st minute. Tori Drepaul found a pass from Philine Bolt off Drepaul's penalty corner and was able to bury the ball home to get Centre back within a goal. Another penalty corner in the final 90 seconds of the quarter again paid off. Jen Taylor had a shot on goal blocked but was able to corral it and fire it in for the tying tally with just 1:20 to play in the 3rd, sending the game to the 4th tied at 2.

The momentum carried over into the 4th as Centre picked up another penalty corner less than 2 minutes in. Ashley Hamilton's shot rolled just wide of the post. Sewanee then took the momentum back, first with a shot stopped by Sheridan in the 50th minute. In the 51st minute, Sewanee was awarded a penalty stroke and was able to score on it to retake the lead, 3-2. Centre struggled to get its offense going again and was only able to muster one more shot. Olivia Vonderheide had a chance at the tie with less than 2 minutes to play, but the try was stopped, as was Centre's run in the tournament.

Centre stayed with Sewanee the whole way despite being out-shot 23-8 overall and 13-5 on goal. Eliza Hensley kept Centre in the game in the first half by tallying 6 saves. Addie Sheridan stopped 2 in the 2nd half.
