Centre Women's Soccer entered Saturday's regular season finale knowing a win would lock up a berth in the SAA Tournament. The Colonels were able to get the job done thanks to a lone goal from
Tessa Miles and stellar defense. Centre knocked off Sewanee, 1-0, for the team's first win at Sewanee since the 2022 SAA Championship.
The Colonels and Tigers traded chances and possession in the early going, a theme that would carry through much of the day. Centre was able to strike in the 17th minute. Off a corner kick,
Tessa Miles took hold of a loose ball and ripped a shot to the back of the net. Her 5th goal of the year gave Centre the lead. From there, both teams locked down the opposition, not allowing another shot attempt the rest of the half as Centre took the 1-0 lead to the break.
Grace Plummer nearly doubled the Colonel lead in the 55th minute but a diving stop by the Tiger keeper kept the game as is at 1-0, Centre.
Riley Givens followed just 28 seconds later with a try in the box that was blocked away.
Madeline Redmon's first threat on goal came in the 69th minute, but quick feet allowed the freshman to scoop up the Tiger try. Redmon made another critical stop in the 76th minute to keep the Colonels in command. A final try from Sewanee with 24 seconds to play sailed well wide as Centre locked up a postseason berth.
The Colonels now await the remainder of the regular season games to be completed before learning of their first round match-up. The tournament is being hosted by Rhodes in Memphis, TN and will start on Thursday, November 6th.
