MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Centre football team capped off its 2025 season on a high note as for the second week in a row, the Colonels rode a dominant defensive performance to victory, defeating the Rhodes Lynx 28-3.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After forcing a punt on the opening series, the offense got the ball and went on a long drive to open up the scoring. A deep ball from
Jack Gohmann to
Blake Busson, combined with the running of
Tyler Blythe, moved Centre inside the Rhodes 10 and
Isaac Johnson ended the drive with a short field goal to give the Colonels a quick 3-0 following a 15-play drive.
- Rhodes responded with what turned out to be the best drive of the game for the Lynx, reaching the Centre red zone and kicking a short field goal of their own on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3.
- After an interception set Rhodes up near midfield, the Centre defense turned the Lynx away when
Ryan Steele broke up a pass on fourth down to give the ball back to the Colonels.
- Inheriting possession at their own 40, the Colonels used a mix of run and pass to advance down the field, culminate in a 23-yard strike from Gohmann to Busson for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was no good and Centre held a 9-3 lead with nine minutes left in the half.
- The Lynx were pinned deep in their own territory on the ensuing kickoff and the defense capitalized on the field position, forcing a safety on third down to take an 11-3 lead.
- Centre continued to take advantage on field position as a long punt by
Will Boehm flipped the field, and a long punt return by
Tayden Mounivong set Centre up in the red zone. The Colonels wasted no time as a catch from Busson put Centre on the Rhodes 3 and
Giaonni Hunter punched it into the end zone from there to make it an 18-3 game.
- More excellent special teams play from Centre again buried Rhodes deep on their side of the field and another good return by Mounivong put Centre in plus territory in the final minutes of the first half. A pass interference call and a 19-yard catch by Busson put Centre in field goal range and Johnson converted from 32 yards out to give Centre a 21-3 lead at the half.
- Both defenses controlled the tempo in the third quarter as Rhodes only crossed midfield once, only to be driven back with a massive sack by
Adam Wicktom on third down.
- On Centre's first possession of the fourth quarter, the running game took over, with Hunter and
Clint Sansbury gaining yardage and bleeding the clock before Gohmann found
Ethan Mays for a 22-yard completion to reach the red zone. Facing fourth down from the Rhodes 3, Hunter powered it in for his second touchdown of the day to give Centre what proved to be the final margin.
