Colonels come back to win second straight SAA indoor track title

SATURDAY RECAP

DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre women's track & field repeated as Southern Athletic Association indoor champions, overcoming an early morning deficit on Saturday to overtake Berry and take first place for the second year in a row.

Centre trailed Berry by nine points after the Friday session and by over 30 points early into the Saturday session before staging their comeback and winning with a combined score of 228 points, 22 more than Berry.

To begin Saturday's events, Serena McNeilly picked up her second win of the meet as she posted a mark of 38-11.75 to take first place in the triple jump. Centre scored 17 points as a team in the triple jump as Marie De Amour Manirakiza, Annabelle Tarter and Arden Campbell all cracked the scoring column as well.

In the shot put, Zoey Shahid-Scott earned a spot on the podium as she produced a throw of 38-7.75 to take third place.

Next up was the pole vault and Lyla Bordwine cleared 10-4.75 to take third place for another podium finish, with Jessica Peterson finishing in seventh to give Centre even more points in a meet where every point was crucial.

The races came next and senior Erin Haugh took second place overall in the mile with a time of 5:15:15. Kate Keller finished seventh for the Centre women in the mile.

In the 60m hurdles, Alexandria Masden got the win and set a new school record with a time of 9.21. McNeilly, Callie Gormley and Janea Bottinelli all finished inside the top eight to rack up a combined 17 points for Centre.

The 400m was a huge race for the Colonels as Centre posted a 1-2-3 finish. Madjo Doumbia got the win with a championship meet record time of 58.75, followed by Ainsley Wilson in second and Bottinelli in third. Faith Peterson and Masden each placed as well to give the Centre women five of the top seven finishers in the race and 30 more points in the championship.

Doumbia came right back in the 60m and set another program record as she clocked in at 7.55 for the win. Chloe Hein finished third and Amari Robinson finished eighth for 17 more points for the Colonels.

In the 800m it was Haugh who led the way again with her second runner-up finish of the day as she posted a time of 2:25.82, with Keller and Emma Musgrave finishing a respective fifth and sixth.

Back to the sprints, the women's 200m saw Doumbia get her third individual win of the day with a time of 24.99, followed by Hein in second, Wilson in seventh and Robinson in eighth. This gave Centre 21 more points and almost locked up the championship.

In the 3000m, Gracie West led Centre with a fourth place finish and a time of 10:46.96, followed by Sophie Bouldin in fifth and Cara Taylor in sixth.

The final race of the day was the 4x400m relay and the Colonels got yet another win to cap it off as the team of Wilson, Bottinelli, Peterson and Doumbia combined for 4:01.75 to take first place.

FRIDAY RECAP
 
DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's track & field team hosted the opening day at the Southern Athletic Association Indoor Championships inside Champions Hall. The Colonels ended the Friday portion in a close second place.
 
Centre finished with 65 points on the first day of competition, nine points behind first place Berry.
 
The afternoon session on Friday featured three field events and the Colonels kicked off the meet with a bang in the high jump as Serena McNeilly added over an inch to her school record, setting a championship meet record with a clear of 5-8.25 to take first place. Riley Brown added another point to Centre's total with an eighth place finish.
 
Another record fell in the long jump as All-American Chloe Hein set a program, facility and championship record with a mark of 19-2.75, surpassing her previous school record in the event by almost three inches. McNeilly finished second on the long jump and Callie Gormley finished fifth to give the Centre women 22 massive points in the event.
 
In the weight throw, Lindsey Browning (45-4) and Zoey Shahid Scott (44-9) placed a respective fifth and seventh to net the Colonels six more points.
 
The evening session began with the 5k and it was a huge point event for the Colonels as Gracie West got the win with a time of 18:16.03.  Sophie Bouldin finished third in the race and Cara Taylor finished fourth to give Centre 21 points in the 5k.
 
In the final race of the day, the women's distance medley relay team of Sarah Pape, Alanna Masden, Adelyn Shupert and Emma Musgrave took fourth place with a time of 13:34.10.

All-SAA honors are given to those student-athletes who finish in the top three in their respective events. A running tally of Centre's All-SAA performers and their events based on their highest finishes will kept here during the conference championships.
