Men’s tennis drops 2025 campaign opener

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre men's tennis team began the 2025 season inside the Seabury Family Tennis Center with a 5-2 setback to Georgetown College.

Division III schools are playing the 2024-25 season under the 7-point dual match format. The ITA and the NCAA announced the one-year, joint pilot of the scoring format in July of 2024.

The top doubles team for the Colonels earned the only win for Centre in that portion of the match. Ben Rueff and Ty Bush won 6-2 over Will Barnes and Alex Stragier of the Tigers. The Rueff and Bush pairing is the first of their careers.

No. 3 doubles were the next closest for the Gold & White. Emilo Ventura Ramirez and Dylan Dethridge fell in a close 6-4 affair versus Andrew Kennedy and Tsugu Hirose. The second seeded duo of Chase Turley and Jasper Gazzo fell 6-2 to Chase Hechemy and Matthew Smith.

Two singles matches went the way of Centre. Gazzo took home the win in the no. 2 singles match with a 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Barnes. Freshman Dethridge won his first collegiate match of the spring season with a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing of Stragier in the no. 3 seeded match.

Isaac Flanery won a set in his top singles spot but was ultimately setback 5-7, 6-2, 5-7 to Leo Schirmer. Jett Anderson also won a set as the Colonel in the no. 4 match but Hirose of Georgetown picked up a 1-6, 7-5, 0-6 win.

The fifth and sixth ranked singles matches saw each Centre player win at least two games in each set but fall in straight sets. William Howell fell to Hechemy by a tally of 3-6, 3-6 in the fifth spot while Anderson Gosnell fell to Stephen Taylor 2-6, 2-6 in the sixth ranked match.
