DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre baseball team began defense of its conference tournament championship with the wildest game of the 2025 season thus far as the no. 2 seed Colonels knocked off the no. 7 seed Sewanee Tigers 10-9 in 11 innings.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels began the game on fire with five consecutive hits.
Ben Prather lined a double down the left field line, and then
Graham Johnson,
Ayden Lohr,
Evan Weyler and
Jonah Porter all singled, with the final hit driving in a pair for a quick 3-0 Centre lead.
Baylor Woodall and
Aaron Lopez added to the lead with RBI singles and Centre held a 5-0 advantage through one.
- In the middle innings the defense began to let the Colonels down as three Centre errors in the third led to two Sewanee runs. Things got worse in the fourth as the Tigers grabbed the lead with four more runs, two of them unearned.
- With one out in the fourth, thunderstorms rolled into Danville and delayed the action by nearly two hours.
Harrison Cowdrey returned to the mound after the delay with a runner on third and quickly got out of the inning without further damage.
- In the fifth, Weyler led off and tied the game with a massive home run to left field. Porter was hit by a pitch and Woodall walked, setting the stage for Lopez to smack a double into the opposite field gap to put Centre back on top 8-6.
- Sewanee took advantage of another Centre defensive miscue in the sixth as a dropped fly ball on what would have been the final out of the inning kept the Tigers alive and they scored three runs to retake the lead at 9-8.
- Moving to the seventh, Lopez came through in the clutch yet again as he hit a deep fly ball to left field and it carried over the fence for a tying solo homer.
- Both teams put the go-ahead or winning runs in scoring position in the ninth, only to come away empty-handed. In the tenth, the go-ahead run for Sewanee was 90 feet away with two outs, but
Zach Heavern, working his fourth inning, delivered a huge strikeout to keep the Tigers off the board.
- Weyler led off the bottom of the 11th with a base hit and the Centre catcher hustled to second to turn it into a double. A deep fly ball moved Weyler to third and the next two batters walked to load the bases. One wild pitcher later, Weyler hustled home and beat the tag to deliver the winning run for the Colonels.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
