DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball advanced to the double elimination round of the SAA Tournament as the Colonels swept the best-of-three series against the Sewanee Tigers, winning the second game 12-2 via run rule.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening stages of the contest belonged to the Tigers, who rallied for three straight two-out hits in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Sewanee added to the lead in the fourth inning with a double steal with runners on the corners to go up 2-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Centre bats awoke.
Graham Johnson hit a ball the other way that landed just inside fair territory for a leadoff double.
Ayden Lohr put the Colonels on the board with a base hit up the middle to drive in Johnson. After
Evan Weyler walked,
Baylor Woodall left no doubt with a towering three-run homer to put the Colonels on top 4-2.
- Centre kept up the pressure in the fifth as
Ben Prather was hit by a pitch to lead off. With two outs, Centre got three consecutive clutch singles from Weyler,
Jonah Porter and
Chase Austin to take a 6-2 lead.
- More two-out production continued for Centre in the sixth.
JT Weisberg was hit by a pitch and stole second. Centre put runners on the corners after Lohr beat out an infield hit and later stole second. Weyler came up big again with a base hit for a pair of RBIs. After
Jamison Craig walked, Centre made it a 10-2 game after singles from Austin and Woodall.
- In the seventh, Prather legged out a hustle double to lead it off and a base hit by Johnson and a walk to Lohr loaded the bases. Weyler picked up another RBI with a walk and Craig sent everybody home with an RBI single to force the run rule.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Weyler went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs to bring his series average to .888. Woodall led all players with four RBIs as six different Centre players finished with multiple hits.
- Prather went the distance on the mound, only allowing one hit after the opening inning while striking out five.
NEXT UP
Centre baseball will head to Millsaps for the next round of the SAA Tournament. The Colonels will play Rhodes in the opening game of the double elimination round.
