Lily Burchett came off the bench in Centre's season opener against the Covenant Scots but wound up being the star of the night. The junior found the net twice as the Colonels took home a 3-1 win to kickoff the 2025 season. The tally doubled her career total as she scored a single goal in her first 2 seasons at Centre.
The Colonels opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when
Claire Cavacini broke into the final 18 of the Scots. Down the right side, her first shot on goal was saved but the rebound came right back to the sophomore. Cavacini swiftly danced around the keeper and chipped the ball home for the opening tally.
Centre's speed and intensity allowed the Colonels to dominate the ball in the first half as Covenant failed to register a single shot on freshman keeper,
Madeline Redmon. With that pressure continuing, Burchett made her mark just before halftime. After playing a pass from Madeline League, Burchett found space and fired the ball home to double the Colonels lead going to halftime.
The theme continued into the 2nd half as Centre's pressure prevented the Scots from consistent builds in the forward half. Covenant got on the board in the 74th minute after a Colonel turnover in the back. Covenant's Camille Raymond floated a ball from the top of the box just over the outstretched arm of Centre's
Kennedy Kanavy in goal.
Centre would not relent as Burchett came back once again in the 80th minute with her 2nd of the night off a brilliant long ball from
Meg Ralston to seal the win. In total, Centre outshot Covenant, 14-6, including an 11-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Colonels are back at Andrew P. Amend Field on Sunday for a matinee against Kentucky Wesleyan starting at 1:00pm.
