Colonels win volleyball opener over Asbury in straight sets

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre volleyball team began the 2025 season with the first of three tournament matches in the Colonel Classic. Against the Asbury Eagles, every set went down to the wire, but all three of them went the Colonels' way as Centre won in straight sets to go 1-0 on the year.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels got off to a hot start in the opening set as they reeled off nine consecutive points to take an 11-3 lead. Asbury slowly began to chip away and eventually cut the lead to one point on four separate occasions, but Centre held on for the 25-23 victory.
- In the second set, Centre had to play from behind as they faced an 18-13 deficit over halfway through the period. The Colonels rallied to score seven of the next eight points to take the lead, eventually building to a 24-20 edge. Asbury fought off three set points to stay alive but Centre converted the fourth to take another 25-23 win.
- The third set featured multiple lead changes as neither team could rally for several points in a row. The Colonels trailed 22-21 before scoring the next three to force match point. The Eagles tied the score to send it to extra points. Hollye Tate gave the Colonels a 25-24 lead with a finesse kill and then Syd Bietz delivered an ace to seal the 26-24 victory and the match for the Colonels.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Rookie Kendra Christopher led the Colonels and tied for a game high with ten kills in her collegiate debut.
- Olivia Chojnacki paced the Colonels with 17 assists.
- Emersyn Pannell led all players with 18 digs.
- The Colonels hit .230 for the match compared to .165 for Asbury. Centre's .313 hitting percentage in the third set was the highest by either team all night.

NEXT UP

The Colonels will wrap up the Colonel Classic with two games on Saturday against Washington & Lee and Wilmington.
