Despite an early goal from
Claire Martin, Centre Field Hockey struggled for quality chances against a tough DePauw defense. The Tigers took advantage with 2 goals in the 3rd quarter en route to a 3-1 win, handing Centre its second straight defeat.
Eliza Hensley got the start in goal for the Colonels and was tested from the start. She made 2 saves just 48 seconds apart inside the opening 5 minutes. The Tigers then capitalized off a penalty corner with a goal with 7:47 to play in the 1st for the lead. Centre countered just 53 seconds later as
Claire Martin ripped a shot home for her 3rd goal of the season. The game went tied at 1 into the second quarter.
Hensley again faced early pressure as DePauw's first shot attempt came just 1:07 into the 2nd but was blocked away. She then made another save just over 2 minutes later to keep the Colonels tied. The Tiger pressure kept going, but Hensley was up to the task, tallying 3 more saves to close out the half.
DePauw again came out aggressive to start the 3rd and saw the reward with a goal just 2:40 in to the quarter to take the lead for good. Centre looked for the equalizer less than 2 minutes later, but 2 shots in a 25-second span were both saved. Depauw flipped the field and turned up its aggression, forcing Hensley to stop 5 shots in the 3rd. The Tigers added a 3rd goal for good measure with 1:53 to go in the 3rd, taking the 3-1 lead to the 4th.
Centre forced DePauw to make 3 saves in the 4th but could not find a ball to the net to get back in the game, ending it with the 3-1 defeat.
Eliza Hensley gave a herculean effort in goal as she recorded 13 saves.
The Colonels now prepare for their home opener next Saturday against Roanoke. The action gets underway at 11:00am.
