Women's Soccer kept its season-long roll going on Sunday with a commanding 2-0 win over Roanoke to extend the team's unbeaten start to 9 straight.
After an opening 10 minutes that saw each team settling into the game, Centre drew the first chance on goal.
Alexis Kronenthal nearly gave the Colonels the lead in the 11th minute but her shot to the low corner was poked away by the Roanoke keeper. Kronenthal had another go in the 14th minute with the shot climbing just over the crossbar. The pressure set the stage for what was to come in the 15th minute as
Lily Burchett tucked home a slick feed from
Riley Givens to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
Gracie Zutterman got the start in goal for Centre on this day, but thanks to strong defense in front, she did not have to tally a save until the 33rd minute. The denial then set the Colonels up for a counterattack that paid off just 56 seconds later.
Zara McCarthy shifted a ball in the box over to
Mary Martin Hampton, who took care of the rest as she buried the ball in the net to double the Colonel lead, 2-0, going to halftime.
Zutterman was tested once more in the 50th minute with a rising shot on target, but the freshman was able to get a mitt on the ball and push it over the bar. After a first half assist,
Riley Givens was looking for to add to her team lead in goals in the 2nd half. She had valid chances in the 58th and 59th minutes but was denied on both as the Colonels looked for the knockout punch. While those chances did not go, the defense continued to keep the Maroons at bay. Zutterman tallied a routine save in the 65th minute, which would be Roanoke's last threat as the Colonels finished off the shutout.
Centre now returns home for the first of 2 straight matches at Amend Field on Wednesday night. The Colonels battle Asbury starting at 7:00pm.
