After a split on the home-opening weekend of the season, Centre Field Hockey hit the road once again ahead of CFHC play. This time, the Colonels got back to their winning ways with a convincing 5-0 win over Eastern Mennonite.
Centre was out to prove a point early and needed just 86 seconds to do it.
Olivia Vonderheide slipped a nice pass into the box, where
Claire Martin was waiting to fire it home to give the Colonels the immediate lead. Eastern Mennonite tried for the answer twice within 22 seconds soon after, but
Addie Sheridan easily swiped both chances away. Centre then had to fend off 5 straight penalty corners in a span of 1 minute, 13 seconds to keep the lead. The offense was slowly able to find its groove again, leading to a 12th minute goal from
Ashley Hamilton to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead heading to the 2nd quarter. The game remained the same at halftime after a quiet quarter for both sides.
Claire Martin nearly had a second goal just 40 seconds into the 3rd quarter off an
Emily Ritchie penalty corner, but her shot was just tipped on the goal line and cleared away. The Colonels continued with ball movement and possession and were rewarded in the 37th minute as
Olivia Vonderheide fired an
Emily Ritchie pass home for a 3-0 lead. Just 56 seconds later,
Philine Bolt got in on the action with her second goal of the season to push the lead to 4.
Claire Martin put the capper on the win with her second goal of the day late in the quarter to seal the 5-0 win.
Martin (2 goals) and Vonderheide (1 goal, 3 assists) led Centre from the start. The 2 saves from
Addie Sheridan were all the Colonels had to face in goal.
Eliza Hensley played the entire second half but never faced a save opportunity. Centre finished with a 27-5 shot edge, including 16-2 on goal.
The Colonels stay in Virginia for a Sunday matinee against Randolph-Macon. The action starts at 11:00am.
