DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre Men's Soccer honored seniors
Will Sweet,
Nick Blair, and
Dominic Do before taking on Sewanee on Sunday at Amend Field. The Colonels fought hard but wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 result, keeping the team winless in SAA play.
Carter Sipes had the first try on goal in the game as a shot in the 2nd minute was turned away.
Declan Miller denied Sewanee in the 7th minute as the ball moved freely up and down the pitch in the early going. Centre's best scoring chance of the day came in the 28th minute. After a Sewanee turnover, the ball was lofted past midfield where
Chandler Hamilton got behind the Tigers' defense. As Hamilton moved in for a 1v1 on goal, Sewanee's keeper came charging out and was able to stop a shot attempt from Hamilton at the edge of the 18-yard box, denying Centre the much-desired goal. Each team traded shots and fouls the rest of the way as the game went to the half in a scoreless draw.
Sewanee controlled the ball in the early stages of the second half and would be rewarded. In the 52nd minute, a cross pass into the box resulted in a shot that deflected down off the crossbar and over the goal line before
Declan Miller could grab it. Centre argued, but the official immediately pointed back to midfield declaring the shot a good goal to give Sewanee the lead. Just two minutes later,
Nick Blair nearly had a shining moment on his Senior Day, but his shot was met by a diving Sewanee save to keep the Colonels off the board.
The game was physical throughout as the teams combined for 27 fouls and 4 yellow cards. While not scoring, Centre's offense was able to come up with 10 total shots and 5 corners as the young starting group works to find a groove heading towards the end of the regular season. Each side continued to push for more offense as the half wore along. Centre's next best shot came in the 79th minute. A cross from the right side found an open
Jafet Figueroa in the box, but his shot attempt sailed high and wide of goal. The Colonels came no closer to scoring and suffered a fifth straight shutout.
Centre will continue to push for that elusive SAA win on Friday when the Colonels travel to Memphis to take on Rhodes starting at 4:30pm ET.
