SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre volleyball team, ranked no. 2 in the latest AVCA and no. 1 in the NCAA's NPI rankings, improved to 21-1 on the year as they swept their way through the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels and Sewanee Tigers in a Saturday doubleheader.
Game 1: Centre 3, Oglethorpe 0
- The Colonels got off to a fiery start as they scored seven of the first eight points of the match. Centre continued to build the lead, highlighted by three aces in four serves from
Syd Bietz. The Colonels eventually won the opening set by a score of 25-10 as
Kendra Christopher put home the final kill.
- The second set was more of the same as Centre ripped off the first six points and never looked back, cruising from there. Christopher again had the clinching kill to put Centre up 2-0 in the match following a 25-7 win.
- In the third set, Oglethorpe played much better than in the first two frames as they withstood another 7-0 spurt to open the set and kept it close, cutting the lead to 23-19 at the closest point. After that, Bietz closed out the match with a kill as Centre won 25-19.
- The Colonels had 13 aces in their win over the Petrels, including a career high six from Bietz. Christopher led all players with 15 kills while hitting .584 for the match.
Game 2: Centre 3, Sewanee 0
- Facing a true road environment for the first time in two weeks, Centre wasted little time grabbing the early momentum, jumping out to an 11-4 lead. Sewanee could get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Colonels reeled off a late 7-1 run to silence a Sewanee rally, winning 25-13 after consecutive kills from
Elise Grundy and Bietz.
- Centre continued to attack from the jump in the second set with a quick 9-2 run to start the frame. The Tigers could only pull to within five for the rest of the set as the Colonels won 25-16 to go up 2-0.
- Another hot start from the Colonels doomed the Tigers in the third set, with Centre pulling ahead 6-1 to start as
Maya Kondik delivered consecutive kills. Centre led by as many as 11 points following an ace from
Campbell Miles and clinched the match two points later as an errant Sewanee serve secured at 25-14 win and Centre's 11th consecutive set victory.
