DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre football team began the conference portion of the 2026 season with a matchup against the Maryville Scots. In a back and forth battle, the game went into overtime before the Colonels lost by a score of 27-21.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels got off to a great start as the defense made the first big play of the game.
Brooks Sapone snuffed out a screen pass for a big loss and then on third down,
Carson Combs forced a Maryville fumble and
Luke Cole fell on the ball for the game's first turnover.
- Five plays later the Colonels got on the board as
Kyle Davis punched it in from two yards out for the game's first points.
- Maryville answered in kind on their next drive, first with a 29-yard pass play to get the ball near midfield, and then a 54-yard run all the way to the house to tie the game.
- Another turnover cost the Colonels this time as the Scots returned an interception inside Centre's 10 and scored two plays later to take a 14-7 lead.
- From there, the defenses dominated the next two and a half quarters as neither offense was able to gain much ground and punting was frequent.
- On the first play of the fourth quarter, Maryville finally got into Centre territory with a long completion. The Scots kept their drive alive with a short yardage conversion on fourth down and eventually went up by two scores on a two-yard quarterback run.
- Centre quickly answered as
Ant Barbee turned a quick pass into 22 yards to cross midfield.
Clint Sansbury converted a big fourth down, enabling
Mason Trimble to find
Dant Bowling for a difficult catch in good coverage for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14.
- On Maryville's next drive it was the Centre defense that made another huge play as Cole strip-sacked the quarterback and
Seandre Maxberry fell on the loose ball in the end zone for the tying touchdown.
- The Scots were undeterred, marching down the field on each of their next two drives but coming up empty on missed field goals, with the first one ricocheting off both uprights and the second kick sailing wide right as time expired in regulation.
- Centre got the ball first to begin the overtime period and immediately faced goal to go after a nice run by Sansbury. Facing fourth down from the 1, the Colonels were stopped just inches from the goal line and the Scots quickly took advantage of the momentum, scoring on their first play of overtime to secure the win.
