Records fall, Colonels take 2nd at SAA

Danville, KY - On the final day of the 2026 SAA Swimming & Diving Championships, Centre broke more records, created more highlights and memories, all while both men's and women's teams finished a strong 2nd place in the overall standings.

Tiernan Moore stole the show once again. After smashing two records on Friday, Moore one-upped himself on Saturday. He broke his own school record in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke, becoming the first Colonel to ever break 2 minutes. Moore swam it in 1:58.97 in the prelims. In the final, he put on another dazzling performance. Moore went out in 26.27 and never looked back as he won the race in another record time: 1:56.26, to blow past NCAA B-cut and set the fastest time of the year in all of NCAA Division III.

Moore proved not to be the only Colonel to set a new record on the night. Freshman Jack Liau did it in the 200 fly. He broke the 2022 mark, set by Jackson Fears in prelims, with a time of 1:50.47. In the final, Liau outdid himself by swimming the race in 1:50.36 to claim the gold.

Caroline Lee turned in another night of brilliance as well. In the 100 free prelims, Lee struggled by her standards and finished 4th overall with a time of 53.10, giving her an outer lane assignment for the final. The senior would not let her swan song end in a whimper though. In the final, Lee surged in the final 50 yards to touch the wall simultaneously with Trinity's Amy Benson as each claimed a share of the gold in a time of 51.73 seconds. Lee was not finished and perhaps saved the most shocking turn of events for her anchor leg of the 400 free relays at night's end. When Lee entered the water, the Colonels were mired back in a distant 5th. Lee has been Centre's relay anchor most the season and showed why here. Lee swam the final 100 in a staggering 50.42 seconds to carry the Colonels all the way to a stunning silver medal. Her split would have set a Centre record in the 100 free by eight-tenths of a second and been 5th fastest in the country this season.

Finals night began with Sarah Feild grabbing a silver medal in the women's 1650 free in a final time of 17:51.69. Emma Meyer swam 7th in the event. Brady Miller also won silver in the 1650 free with a time of 15:46.53. Avery Gabbard won bronze in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.16. Cate Coartney and Sophia McCalla each just missed out on the bronze in the 200 fly as they placed 4th and 5th respectively with Coartney falling just 0.25 seconds short.

At the end of the night, Trinity claimed both the men's and women's overall titles. Centre did walk away with more hardware though as Justin Toth was named the Men's Diver of the Meet. Dive Coach, Woody Franklin, was also named the SAA Men's Diving Coach of the Year after the Colonels swept the top-4 spots in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.

Centre Men's Diving now turns its focus to the NCAA Regionals, which started on Friday, February 27th in Atlanta, GA at Emory University.
