DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre baseball dug an early hole in the first inning to open round robin tournament action against the Wheaton Thunder, but the bats woke up in the middle innings as the Colonels claimed a 12-2 victory in seven innings via run rule.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The first four hitters for Wheaton all reached on a base hit, a hit by pitch and two straight walks, the last coming with the bases loaded for the game's first run. Starter
Isaac Rone got out of the jam with minimal damage, allowing just one more run on an RBI groundout as Centre escaped the inning trailing by two.
- Centre recorded eight straight outs on offense to open the game, but the Colonels made a push in the third. With two outs,
Forrest Day and
Chase Austin walked. A balked moved the runners into scoring position and a base hit up the middle by
Ayden Lohr tied the game at 2-2.
- One inning later, Centre unleashed another two-out rally.
Jamison Craig walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error.
Graham Johnson went the other way with a single to give the Colonels the lead.
Baylor Woodall was hit and Day singled to load the bases, and
Chase Austin drove in two with a hard shot up the middle for a 5-2 Centre lead.
- Johnson led off the Centre sixth with a single and pinch runner
Wesley Taylor advanced to third after a pickoff throw got away. After Woodall walked and stole second, a wild pitch allowed the speedy Taylor to score. Another line drive single from Austin made it 7-2 and Lohr followed with a triple that landed just inside the foul line for another Centre run. Centre capped off the rally with an RBI groundout from
Aaron Lopez and a double into the gap from
Evan Rygalski to take a 10-2 lead.
- In the seventh, Day wound up on third base after a deep fly ball was dropped. Austin walked to put runners on the corners and Lohr doubled down the line to score the final two runs of the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The top of the order did the most damage as Austin and Lohr combined for five hits and eight RBIs on the night, with Lohr driving in a season high five runs.
- After the rough first inning, Rone allowed only one hit over the next five to get his second win of the season.
