Colonels drop Saturday doubleheader at Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Centre baseball team opened conference play with a weekend series at Rhodes, starting with a pair of wild games on Saturday, both of which went to the home team by scores of 15-10 and 9-8.

Game 1: Rhodes 15, Centre 10

- The Colonels dug an early hole in the second inning of game 1 as Rhodes scored five runs on two hits, a walk, an error and a three-run homer. The Lynx added to the lead in the third with a solo homer to go up 6-0.
- Centre got a run back in the fourth as they loaded the bases with two outs after Aaron Lopez walked and Matthew Maggard and Forrest Day each singled. JT Weisberg then worked a bases loaded walk to make it a 6-1 game.
- The Rhodes bats came alive in the bottom of the inning as the Lynx sent ten men to the plate, scoring five runs on five hits and three walks to put a potential run rule in play.
- Trailing 12-1 in the fifth, Ben Prather led off the inning with a base hit and Ayden Lohr followed with a two-run homer to make it 12-3. Evan Weyler walked with two outs and eventually scored on an error to cut into the lead some more.
- Centre cut into the deficit even more in the sixth as Weisberg led off with a walk and later scored on a shot up the middle by Prather to make it 12-5.
- With the bases loaded in the seventh, Centre narrowed the gap once more after a deep fly ball from Graham Johnson drove in Weyler and made it a 12-6 game.
- Rhodes put an end to the rally in the bottom of the seventh as a pair of Centre errors led to three more runs.
- Centre had two outs and a man on first in the bottom of the eighth before Weyler, Maggard and Day delivered consecutive RBI doubles to cut the Rhodes lead to 15-9.
- Lohr connected on his second homer of the day on a solo shot in the top of the ninth to make it 15-10, but that was the last time the Colonels threatened in the inning.

Game 2: Rhodes 9, Centre 8

- Centre got on the board first in the third inning as Prather doubled into the gap and was driven in by a base hit up the middle from Lohr for a 1-0 lead.
- In the fourth, Centre had runners on second and third after a single from Weyler and an error. Johnson drove in both runners with a base hit and then Prather went yard with a two-run blast and a 5-0 Centre lead.
- The Lynx used the long ball to get back in the game, homering three times in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.
- Things calmed down until the seventh as Lohr went deep for the third time in the doubleheader to give the Colonels a 7-5 lead. Rhodes answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out rally, tying the score again with consecutive hits.
- After Day reached on an error in the eighth, Johnson came through in the clutch again, going the other way with a base hit to put Centre back on top 8-7.
- The Colonels were one out away from pulling off the doubleheader split, but a walk and a two-run homer gave the Lynx the walk-off win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORES

- Prather and Lohr each led the way for Centre with five hits across the doubleheader. Lohr's three homers in two games more than doubled his season total through the first 16 games of the season.
- Day's four hits in game 1 were a career high.
