DANVILLE, Ky. - Centre baseball secured a regular season series victory over the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels by sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, winning 3-2 in extra innings before ending the day with a 7-2 victory.
Game 1: Centre 3, Oglethorpe 2 (10 innings)
- It was all zeroes on the scoreboard until Centre cracked it in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases after
Baylor Woodall and
Jonah Porter walked and
Ben Prather singled. A deep fly ball from
Ayden Lohr produced the game's first run.
- Centre added to the lead in the fifth inning when
Aaron Lopez belted a leadoff homer over the big wall in left field to make it a 2-0 lead.
- The Petrels scored their first run of the day in the sixth inning and then tied the game in the top of the eighth on a solo homer.
- The game advanced to extra innings and after
Zach Heavern pitched his way out of a jam in the top of the tenth,
Evan Rygalski led off the bottom of the inning with a pinch hit single.
Carson Mire pinch ran for Rygalski and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt. After the Petrels intentionally walked Prather to set up a potential double play ball, Lohr made them pay with a shot up the middle for a base hit, driving in Mire for the winning run.
Game 2: Centre 7, Oglethorpe 2
- Centre got the scoring going in the bottom of the third, putting runners on the corners after singles from Porter and
Graham Johnson. A sac fly by Prather made it an early 1-0 lead.
- In the fourth, Lopez was hit by a pitch to lead off, followed by a double into the gap from
Chase Austin. An RBI groundout from
Evan Weyler increased the Centre lead to 2-0.
- A leadoff walk from Porter in the fifth and a base hit by Johnson set up Centre's next run as pinch runner
Jamison Craig scored on a sac fly from Lohr to make it 3-0.
- Starter
Harrison Cowdrey did not allow a hit through the first six innings, striking out nine for the game. In the seventh, the Petrels finally mounted a rally, cutting the lead to 3-1 after two hits and two walks.
Tommy Severson came on in relief of Cowdrey and after a sac fly and a single, Centre led 3-2 with the bases loaded, but Severson escaped the inning with the lead.
- The Colonels used small ball in the bottom of the seventh to score their fourth run as Prather blasted a comebacker off the pitcher for a base hit, stole second, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a Lopez sac fly to make it 4-2.
- In the eighth, Weyler led off with a deep fly ball that took a strange bounce off the wall for a triple.
Forrest Day followed with a base hit up the middle for a 5-2 lead. Two batters later, Craig left no doubt with a massive two-run homer for a 7-2 lead.
- Severson set the Petrels down in order in the ninth for a nine-out save.
