Colonels cage Panthers in season opener

Danville, Ky. - Centre Women's Soccer took on Division II Kentucky Wesleyan for the second straight season at Amend Field on Tuesday night. The Colonels dominated the ball from the onset and eventually were rewarded on the scoreboard via a 3-0 win to kickoff the 2026 campaign.

Zara McCarthy got the offensive attack going in the 9th minute with a shot was that stopped, but it set the tone for the remainder of the night. Aida Bell and Brooke Beasley had golden chances for the opener in the 13th and 16th minutes but could not get the proper bounce. The Colonels continued to press in the Panther end and got the payoff in the 36th minute. Mary Martin Hampton was brought down in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Brooke Beasley calmly stepped to the spot and tucked the ball away to give the Colonels the goal they were looking for and a 1-0 lead. KWC came close with a shot off the crossbar in the 37th minute, as Centre took the 1-0 edge to the locker room.

The second half proved a similar story to the first, only the Colonels needed far less time to add to the advantage. In the 51st minute, Claire Cavacini delivered a clever cross into the box from the left edge. Zara McCarthy was on the receiving end and made no mistake as she slid the ball past the Panther goalkeeper to double Centre's lead. Ella Mann nearly made it 3 less than three minutes later. Her shot was stopped but just delayed the inevitable. In the 58th minute, Cavacini got free down the left again and sent a ball to the back post, where Mann was waiting to deflect it home to give Centre the commanding 3-0 lead, which proved the final result.

Centre outshot Kentucky Wesleyan, 20-3, in total, and 13-1 on goal. Beasley, McCarthy, and Mann all tallied markers to go with 2 helpers from Claire Cavacini to seal the season opening win.

The Colonels next are on the road this Friday night as they travel north to battle Wittenberg. Kickoff is set for 6:30pm.
