Danville, Ky. - Centre Men's Soccer closed out the 37th Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic on Sunday against Brevard. Despite 14 shots on goal, the Colonels came up on the short end of the scoreboard, 2-1.
Brevard struck early to grab a lead as a counter and tally in the 7th minute but the Tornados into the lead. From there, Centre dominated the ball and field position for the remainder of the first half. The first go at goal came from
Tyler Smith in the 11th minute, but as was the case for much of the day, a save was made.
Jacob Tyler found a run in the box in the 17th minute but was also turned away. The same went for
Ryan O'Hara in the 23rd minute as Centre kept pressing for the equalizer. The chances continued to come but not the goals as Brevard took a 1-0 lead to halftime despite Centre possessing the ball at a 67% clip and out-shooting the Tornados, 10-2.
In the second half, Brevard began to possess more and build more consistency in its threats on goal. The first such chance came in the 56th minute with a chance that was stopped by Centre's
Declan Miller. Another chance was again turned away less than 2 minutes later to keep Centre within a goal. The teams continued to trade chances until Brevard found a breakthrough in the 79th minute. A corner was perfectly played into the box and a snap header put the ball in the net before Miller could react as Brevard doubled its lead. Centre finally got a chance on its end.
Will Sweet took a run down the Brevard right side and as he made his way into the penalty box, he was taken down by a defender. The referee pointed to the spot to indicate the penalty kick.
Tyler Smith calmly slotted home his 4th goal of the young season to get Centre back within a goal. Less than a minute later,
Ryan O'Hara took a perfect pass from
Nico Voight into the box. The Centre junior went for the bottom left corner, but Brevard's keeper got his mitt on the ball to deny the tie. His 13th and final save was enough for Brevard to escape with the win.
The Colonels now turn their focus to a rare Saturday home fixture as Denison comes to Amend Field on September 19th with a scheduled start time of 1:00pm.
