Colonels drop home opener to LaGrange, 16-14

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre football team played its home opener on a hot Saturday afternoon in Andy Frye Stadium as they hosted a LaGrange team that made the Division III playoffs in 2025. A defensive struggle for both teams resulted in a 16-14 LaGrange victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels and Panthers traded punts on their first four possessions before Centre began to make some noise on their third drive. Mason Trimble made his debut at quarterback and led Centre on a long drive, highlighted by a 41-yard completion to Dant Bowling. Another pass to Bowling got Centre inside the 5 before Kyle Davis eventually powered it in from the goal line to give Centre a 7-0 lead.
- A horse collar tackle gave Centre the ball inside LaGrange territory to start the second quarter and Trimble found Cree Ross and Ant Barbee for big gains to reach the red zone. Centre called Davis's number and he scored from four yards out for a 14-0 lead for the Colonels.
- With the Panthers nearing midfield late in the second quarter, Wyatt Fowler made a big play on defense as he stopped a quarterback run on 4th & 1 to turn the ball back over to the Colonels. After Centre's drive stalled, Will Boehm pinned LaGrange on their own 1 with a perfect punt.
- LaGrange picked up a couple of first downs and then hit a big play for their first points as a 67-yard touchdown pass made it a 14-6 game after the PAT attempt failed.
- The Centre defense forced a LaGrange punt on the first series of the second half, but a muffed punt gave the ball back to the Panthers inside the red zone, which led to a field goal to cut the lead to 14-9.
- Following another outstanding punt from Boehm, LaGrange faced 3rd & 14 from their own 5 when they made the biggest play of the game, completing a deep ball to advance 79 yards into the red zone. The Panthers punched it in three plays later to take the lead 16-14 after an eight-yard touchdown run.
- The Colonels moved the ball all the way to the LaGrange 30 on their first possession of the fourth quarter before getting stopped on fourth down to get turned away. The defense quickly forced a punt to give it back to the Colonels and the offense went to work again on their final major opportunity as Trimble and Davis led the offense down the field, getting to the Panthers' 16-yard line to set up a field goal attempt that missed with 74 seconds left.
