Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's lacrosse team hosted Baldwin Wallace on Thursday evening. After a first-half scoring overload, the Colonels edged out the Yellow Jackets by a score of 14-13, improving to 3-2 on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
-The Colonels were able to strike first, finding three continuous goals in
Lily Gahm,
Gracie Garner, and
Haley Rice. By the end of quarter one, Rice had tallied her second goal while
Addie Lewis added two herself. Tripling the Yellow Jacket's in points, the score sat at Centre 6, Baldwin Wallace 2, entering the second quarter.
- Baldwin Wallace opened the next period's scoring with a fast break off the draw 18 seconds into the quarter. Centre's
Ella Treinen quickly responded, beating her defender off the crease for a wide-open look at goal. Gahm found Rice for another Colonel goal, but not before the Yellow Jackets added another point to their board. Taking advantage of the mismatch from down below,
Emma Botts found the last goal of the half with the set-up from Treinen. Entering the halftime break, the Colonels held a three-point advantage over the Yellow Jackets.
- Out of the half, Baldwin Wallace got on the board first after being awarded a free-position shot. In the next possession, Gahm claimed a hat-trick after beating her defender in the eight. Midway through the quarter, the game became an offensive affair as the Colonels answered every Yellow Jacket goal with one of their own, and vice versa. Baldwin Wallace eventually broke the pattern with two consecutive goals, causing Centre to burn a timeout. Out of the break, Rice forced a turnover, turning a coast-to-coast goal that would conclude the quarter's scoring.
-Entering the fourth quarter, the scoreboard read Centre 13, Baldwin Wallace 9. The Yellow Jackets were the first to get on the board, and in the next possession, the Colonels were put in a man down situation. In goal,
Gracey Falk put up two huge free position stops that held the Colonels over until the game returned to even numbers. Baldwin Wallace would later add two additional goals to shrink the score deficit to just one point. With three minutes remaining, Treinen marked the Colonels first goal of the quarter, but the Yellow Jackets quickly responded to make it a one-point game once again. In the final possession, Baldwin Wallace took the draw, but the Colonel's low defense stifled any hope the Yellow Jackets had for a comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Gahm and Rice tied for the game's leaders in points. Rice collected four goals and one assist while Gahm scored three, adding two helpers
- Centre just edged out Baldwin Wallace in shots, taking 35 to opposing's 33.
- In goal, Falk was the game's leader in ground balls with six, adding a caused turnover and eight saves.
- The Yellow Jackets just beat the Colonels in 50-50 balls, taking 22 as Centre grabbed 21.
