SEWANEE, Tenn.- On Thursday afternoon, Centre field hockey traveled to Sewanee for the inaugural Collegiate Field Hockey Conference (CFHC) Championship Tournament. Taking on Concordia in the quarterfinals, the Colonels downed the Falcons in an overtime thriller as
Ashley Hamilton netted a stroke, setting the final at 3-2.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- In the opening frame, the Gold & White had the advantage in offensive possessions, favoring in both corners (4-0) and shots (7-0). Concordia's goalie kept the Falcons alive, stuffing all seven of the Colonels' shot attempts and rendering the opening quarter scoreless.
- The Falcons swiftly opened the game's scoring in the second period, netting the first goal 47 seconds in. Midway through the quarter, Centre's
Reese Smith evened the score with an unassisted goal. Entering halftime, the board showed an even tie at 1-1.
- Out of the break, Centre took the lead during the first corner of the half. Hamilton beamed one in off the insert, the assist coming from
Maggie Will. The Falcons couldn't muster a goal in the period, leaving the score at 2-1 with Centre favoring entering the final 15-minutes of regulation.
- During the fourth, Centre continued to dominate offensively but the Falcons' goalie kept the Colonels at bay with six saves. In the final five minutes, Concordia was awarded a key stroke in the hopes of tying the game. Centre's
Carlie McKenry delivered a huge, stick side save but less than a minute later, the Falcons placed the tying goal. When regulation ran out, the score remained tied at 2-2, sending the two squads into sudden death.
- The Colonels took care of business in the opening minute of overtime.
Claire Martin drove in one-on-one with the keeper but was fouled, awarding the Colonels a key stroke opportunity. Placed at the dot, Hamilton successfully completed her third stoke of the season, downing the Falcons 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hamilton led the Colonels in goals with two. Her stroke was her third game winning goal of the season.
- Smith followed with one goal while Will led the team in assists with one.
- In goal, McKenry collected three saves.
- Centre favored in both shots and corners. The Colonels took 22 shots on frame versus the opposing five. The Gold & White were awarded 12 corners; The Falcons had three.
