SEWANEE, Tenn. - Centre volleyball played its longest match of the season as the Colonels and Sewanee Tigers pushed one another to the brink, with the match going the full five sets and multiple sets requiring extra points to be settled. Ultimately it was the home team who prevailed, winning the fifth set in extra points to take the match.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening set was a close one as
Mady Mardock led the Centre offense early, scoring four kills in a 5-0 Colonels run. After multiple lead changes and ties,
Abby Swartz made it 24-23 Centre with a kill and then teamed with
Maya Kondik on a block to give the Colonels a 25-23 win.
- The second set belonged to the Tigers, with Sewanee breaking it open late with a run of seven straight points and eventually winning by a score of 25-17.
- Another close set followed in the third as neither team led by more than two points until Sewanee took a 23-20 lead. The Colonels fought off a pair of set points but could not fight off the third and the Tigers won it 25-23.
- The fourth set was even closer and more dramatic. The Colonels trailed for almost the entire set, but kept it close enough to rally late. Centre faced a match point at 24-23, but
Syd Bietz and Swartz delivered consecutive kills to retake the lead and Centre slammed the door with a 26-24 win.
- Both teams made large runs in the fifth set, matching each other blow for blow. The Colonels and Tigers each fought off match points in the frame before Sewanee scored the final three to take the 18-16 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bietz led all players with 24 kills.
- Centre held a 63-47 advantage in assists, with
Madi Winfield leading the way with 40.
- The Colonels also held the edge in digs, 66-58.
Emersyn Pannell finished with a game high 19 digs.
