SAN ANTONIO - Centre football found itself locked in a defensive struggle on the road against the Trinity Tigers, ranked no. 23 in the nation in the most recent AFCA Coaches Poll. Ultimately it was the Tigers who prevailed by a score of 19-14.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After a missed field goal by Trinity on the opening drive of the contest, the two teams traded punts for most of the first quarter. The Tigers eventually put together a drive late in the opening quarter and scored on a seven-yard touchdown pass for the first points of the game.
- It took Centre 13 seconds to tie the score as
Cree Ross took the ensuing kickoff and raced 93 yards to daylight, scoring his second kickoff return touchdown of the season to make it a 7-7 ballgame.
- Trinity kicked a short field goal on their first possession of the second quarter, and that turned out to be the final points of the half for either team as the rest of the period belonged to the defenses.
Nehemiah Brown-Hamlin picked off a Trinity pass for his second turnover in as many games to stop a Trinity drive in its tracks.
- Right before halftime, the Tigers looked to extend the lead as they marched deep into Centre territory on a long drive, but on a short yardage situation on fourth down,
Will Nichols and
Brennan Bareswilt teamed up to stonewall Trinity and keep it a 10-7 game at the half.
- On the first Trinity possession of the second half, the Tigers utilized the short passing game for a long sustained drive and reached the end zone to go up by two scores at 17-7.
- Centre attempted to answer, reaching the Trinity 7 following a deep ball from
Jack Gohmann to
Blake Busson, but the Tigers defense held and the Colonels missed a short field goal.
- Moving to the fourth quarter, the Centre defense continued to hold firm, keeping the Tigers off the board. The Colonels hit another big play with just over ten minutes remaining as Gohmann connected with
Luke Sasser for a 47-yard touchdown pass to make it a 17-14 game. The touchdown was the first in Sasser's career.
- After the Centre score, both defenses dominated the quarter, forcing five consecutive punts. Trinity won the field position battle and their last punt pinned the Colonels deep in their own territory with just under two minutes left. Two plays later, the Tigers recorded a sack in the end zone for a safety that effectively put the game away.
