DANVILLE, Ky. - On a when Centre football celebrated 27 members of its senior class, the Colonels hosted the no. 20 Berry Vikings and fell by a final score of 31-13.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The first quarter belonged to the defenses as both teams forced punts on the first five series of the game.
- A great punt by
Will Boehm put Berry in the largest possible hole as it was downed on the visitors' 1-yard line, but the Vikings churned away for a couple of first downs and then hit their first big play of the game on a 69-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
- As the clock turned to the second quarter, a Centre fumble set Berry up in Centre territory and the Vikings consumed most of the clock on a long drive that resulted in a short field goal to make it a 10-0 game.
- Berry added to the lead late in the period as the Vikings converted a deep ball for a 41-yard touchdown pass on third down to extend to a 17-0 lead.
- The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds and Centre utilized a long catch and run by
Blake Busson and a personal foul penalty on Berry to reach the red zone. From there,
Jack Gohmann found
Tate Johnson from 18 yards out to cut into the deficit and make it a 17-7 game at the half.
- After neither team scored on their first drive of the third quarter, the Centre defense made a big play as
Will Zabel picked off a pass and returned it to the Berry 10 to set up 1st & goal for the Colonels.
- One play later, Gohmann connected with
Travis Maufer in the end zone and Centre cut the lead to 17-13 after the PAT attempt failed.
- Berry wasted no time regaining the momentum as the Vikings converted a 36-yard pass for a score to go back up by a margin of 24-13.
- Centre reached the red zone again on their next drive, thanks to another deep ball from Gohmann to Busson. Once the Colonels got inside the 20, the offense stalled and Berry stopped the attempt on fourth down to regain possession.
- After forcing a punt, Centre again looked to cut it to one score as Gohmann and Busson hooked up again on a bomb to reach the Berry 12, but the Vikings picked off a pass in the end zone on the next play to stop the drive.
- Another Berry interception on the next drive and a long return gave the Vikings the ball at the Centre 4, and Berry was able to get it into the end zone to extend the lead to 31-13. From there, the Vikings defense held on the final drive to ice the game.
