SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre football team had its best team performance of the season as they cruised to a 28-0 victory against the Sewanee Tigers. It was the first shutout for the Colonels since a 30-0 win over Rhodes during the post-COVID 2021 spring season and Centre's 19th consecutive victory over the Tigers.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels and Tigers traded punts over the first four series of the game. On Sewanee's third possession, the Tigers reached the Centre 10 after a pair of long runs, but the Centre defense held strong as
Brooks Sapone picked off a Sewanee pass in the end zone to turn the Tigers away with no points.
- Centre got the offense going on the next drive as
Jack Gohmann and
Blake Busson connected on a long pass for 23 yards. First down runs by Gohmann and
Giaonni Hunter got the Colonels into Sewanee territory. The Colonels reached the red zone as the clock turned to the second quarter and on second down, Gohmann found tight end
Ethan Mays for a 13-yard touchdown connection.
- A short Sewanee drive belonged to senior linebacker
Brennan Bareswilt, who stuffed the Tigers on a run play for a loss on first down and then intercepted a pass on the very next play.
- Sewanee looked for the tying touchdown late in the second quarter as they went on a long drive, but
Carson Combs and
Will Nichols combined for a sack on third down and forced a punt.
- Centre took the ball from their own 6 and went to work. Gohmann found Busson for a pair of 27-yard strikes to reach plus territory. A long run by Hunter and a 15-yard catch by
Dant Bowling put the Colonels into the red zone and
Davis Yates punched it in from six yards out to cap off the 94-yard drive, putting Centre up 13-0 after the extra point was blocked.
- The Colonels started the second half with a bang as
Cree Ross took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and dashed 98 yards to paydirt for his third kickoff return touchdown of the season, the most in the country.
- After trading punts on the next two series, the Centre defense produced another turnover as
Wyatt Fowler sacked the quarterback for a huge loss that forced a fumble that was recovered by
Luke Cole to set Centre up at the Sewanee 22.
- A run by Hunter put Centre inside the 10 and on third down, Gohmann found Busson from eight yards out for another touchdown. On the PAT attempt, Sapone ran it in for a two-point conversion to make it 28-0.
- The fourth quarter saw Centre put in its reserves, with the defense still keeping the Tigers off the board.
