SALEM, Va. - Centre women's basketball came back from a ten-point deficit in the second quarter to improve to 3-0 on the year as the Colonels knocked off Roanoke 67-59 in their first true road game of the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels got off to a very cold start, missing their first 11 shots of the game while the host Maroons scored the first ten points. Centre eventually started to see the ball go in the basket as
Lilly Reid broke the ice with a three-pointer.
Lindsay Jessie made a pair of baskets in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter to cut the margin to 14-9.
- Neither team scored for nearly the first four minutes of the second period.
Ka'Niah Edelen buried a three to tie the score at 14-14 before Roanoke reeled off the next ten points to equal their biggest lead of the day with just under four minutes left in the half.
- From there, the Colonels got hot and the Maroons went cold, with Centre scoring the final nine points of the quarter. Another three-pointer from Edelen in the final minute made it a 24-23 game at the break.
- In the third quarter, Centre again played from behind for the most part, rallying to tie the game on several occasions but never getting over the hump to take the lead. Finally Reid connected on a three to put Centre on top for the first time at 43-42. A free throw by
Claire Russell made it a tie ballgame at 44-44 going into the fourth period.
- The lead changed hands six times in the early stages of the fourth quarter as the two teams traded baskets. Centre went up 54-50 on four free throws by Edelen, but the Maroons tied it again at 54-54 going into the final media timeout. A basket by Russell put Centre on top and following a clutch block by
Ryleigh Campbell, Reid drove into the paint and scored to put Centre up by two possessions. Roanoke could get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Centre made 10-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
