NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Centre men's lacrosse headed to Tennessee to take part in the Music City Classic hosted by Sewanee. Facing Piedmont in game one, the Colonels dominated, thumping the Lions 17-8 for their first win of the young season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Lions opened the game's scoring before
Max Speers tallied the Colonels' first goal with the help of
Nick Witcher.
Graysen Jolly doubled the score thirty seconds later. In the final two minutes, Piedmont tied it back up at 2-2 before Jolly claimed his second goal to give Centre the lead entering the next period.
- The Colonels dominated the second quarter, netting nine goals while the Lions placed one. In the second frame alone,
Henry Cato,
Ben Hubbs,
Noah Malubay, and Witcher joined the scoring column. Entering halftime, the Colonels led 12-3.
- Out of the break, Centre came out shooting but Piedmont ultimately claimed the first goal of the half. Nine minutes in, the Colonels tallied their 13
th goal as
Nico Valentino netted the first of his career with Centre. Closing the period, Piedmont notched two additional points that bookended Hubbs' third goal. Entering the fourth quarter, Centre led 14-6.
- Rookie
Gunnar Dykes opened the final frame with the helper from
Davis Wilmes. Wilmes later scored his own with the assist of
Jack Cunningham. The Lions placed two more goals before Valentino closed the scoring, setting the final score at Centre 17, Piedmont eight.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Gold & White possessed nine athletes in the scoring column.
- Jolly led the game in goals with a career high of four, adding one assist. Hubbs and Speers netted three each while Valentino claimed two. Wilmes, Witcher, Malubay, Dykes, and Cato scored one goal each.
- Two Colonels netted their first collegiate goals, Valentino and Dykes.
- Wilmes led the game in assists with a career high of three.
- At the face-off, Centre dominated, going 19-29.
Luca Bowling went 15-18 while
Colton Gayne,
Sam Berry,
Grayson Shumate, and
Caden Canzano got reps.
- Centre favored in groundballs with 34; Piedmont scooped 20. Bowling led the game in ground balls with seven.
- In goal,
Devin Melton got his first collegiate start. Together, he and
Sammy Zickel split time, stopping ten shots and leading Centre's defense to 20-22 successful clears.
