ELMHURST, Ill.- On Saturday afternoon, Centre men's lacrosse traveled to Illinois for their 2025 season opener. Taking on Elmhurst, the Colonels' fourth quarter stall cost them, falling by score of 17-12.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Bluejays initiated the game with an unassisted goal two minutes in.
David Caldwell answered, simultaneously opening a 3-0 run for the Colonels to take an early lead. Senior
Ben Hubbs doubled the deficit by repurposing a saved shot back to cage before
Ryan Black netted Centre's third unanswered goal with the assist of
Graysen Jolly. With two minutes left in the period, Elmhurst opened a two-goal tare that tied the game at 3-3 entering quarter two.
- Hubbs claimed the first two goals of the second quarter. The first came four minutes in, the second, a behind the back shot midway through the period. Elmhurst answered with a pair of goals less than a minute apart to retie the game at 5-5. With two minutes left in the half, the Bluejays stole the lead during a man-up opportunity, setting the score at Elmhurst six, Centre five entering the break.
- The third quarter proved to be a high scoring trading game, Caldwell initiating the second half 90 seconds in, the Bluejays answering in the next possession.
Max Speers joined the scoring column and again, Elmhurst responded. Midway through,
Ryan Hall netted a diving goal before Jolly gave Centre a brief lead with an additional point. The Bluejays hit back with three unanswered goals, but the Colonels again tied the game thanks to a pair of unassisted scores from Hubbs and
Henry Cato. Entering the final quarter, the game was tied at 11-11.
- Elmhurst created distance with a 3-0 run to open the fourth period. Hall eventually broke the Colonels' silence, netting what would be the team's only goal of the frame. The Bluejays closed the game with a second 3-0 scoring stretch, freezing the final score at Elmhurst 17, Centre 12.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hubbs led the Colonels in goals with four. Caldwell and Hall netted two apiece while Jolly, Speers, Black, and Cato tallied one.
- In goal,
Sammy Zickel and
Kyle Granquist split time. Together the two went 16-19 on clears and stopped six shots.
- Jolly led Centre in assists with three.
- The two teams nearly matched one another in shots taken, Centre taking 43, Elmhurst attempting 42.
