Volleyball drops doubleheader to open conference play

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Centre volleyball opened conference play with round robin tournament action at Trinity, which saw them compete against the Rhodes Lynx and Trinity Tigers in the Saturday session. After dropping the opening contest to Rhodes in four sets, the Colonels fell to the no. 16 Tigers in three.

Game 1: Rhodes 3, Centre 1

- Rhodes got off to a hot start in the opening set, scoring nine of the first 11 points and never looking back, leading by as many as 12 points before eventually winning 25-17.
- Trailing 16-15 in the second set, the Colonels ripped off four straight points to take a 19-16 lead and stayed ahead for the rest of the frame, holding off a late charge to win 25-22 as Syd Bietz put home the final kill.
- In the third set, the Colonels got off to a nice start as they took a 10-4 lead. Rhodes responded with a 9-1 rally to go in front and while Centre would later tie the score at 13-13 and later 17-17, they couldn't get back on top as Rhodes took a 25-20 win.
- Rhodes grabbed the early lead in the fourth set and kept it, never letting Centre rally to get back into it and eventually taking the match with a 25-17 victory.

Game 2: #16 Trinity 3, Centre 0

- The opening set turned out to be the closest of the contest on the final scoreboard as Centre stayed close with the no. 16 team in the nation in the early going. Trinity led by as many as nine points at 21-12 before holding off a late Centre charge to win 25-19.
- The Tigers began the second set on fire as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead and kept the momentum going the rest of the way as they won 25-7.
- In the third set it was the Colonels who grabbed the early lead as they took advantage of Trinity miscues to go up 11-6. Trinity battled back and eventually used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good, winning by a score of 25-17.

NEXT UP

The Trinity SAA round robin will conclude on Sunday as Centre takes on no. 15 Berry for their second ranked battle in a row.
