WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Centre volleyball team played in the first of two straight weekend doubleheaders as they faced host Otterbein as well as Stevenson in Day 1 of the Pam Briggs Classic. After dropping the opening match to Otterbein in straight sets, the Colonels turned it around and swept Stevenson to finish their afternoon.
Game 1: Otterbein 3, Centre 0
- The opening two sets belonged to the home team as Otterbein went on long runs in each set to take the win by respective scores of 25-13 and 25-15.
- Centre played much better at the end of the third set when it looked like the Cardinals would make quick work of the Colonels. Trailing 22-14, Centre scored nine straight points to grab the lead thanks to consecutive aces by
Riley Snowden and consecutive kills by
Syd Bietz. Centre forced a pair of set points, but Otterbein fought them off and eventually won it by a score of 27-25.
Game 2: Centre 3, Stevenson 0
- The Colonels dominated the opening set, going on several huge runs to lead by as many as 13 points at 20-7.
Elise Grundy and
Madi Winfield teamed up on a block to provide the final point in a 25-13 Centre win.
- In the second set, the Colonels dug an early 11-6 hole before rallying back in a huge way, scoring the next five to tie it. An ace by Bietz gave Centre a 14-13 lead and from there the Colonels never trailed again, pulling away with a 7-1 run as Bietz put home the final kill on a 25-18 victory.
- Centre again took the early lead in the third set and never relinquished it, leading by a dozen points at 22-10 following three kills in a row from
Hollye Tate.
Delia Long delivered the clinching kill as Centre improved to 3-2 on the season with a 25-16 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
- The Colonels hit several career highs in the win over Stevenson. Tate led all players with a career high 15 kills, while Winfield hit a game and career high 37 assists.
- Centre had game highs in digs in both matches as
Emersyn Pannell had 13 in game 1 and Winfield equaled the amount in game 2.
- The Colonels hit .293 as a team against Stevenson while limiting the Mustangs to -.011. That included a .407 hitting percentage in the opening set.

Centre will stay in Ohio for the rest of the Pam Briggs Classic on Saturday, but they will travel to Bexley to take on Hanover and host Capital.
