GEORGETOWN, Texas - Centre men's basketball battled the Southwestern Pirates for an intense 40 minutes in a game that featured eight ties and 35 lead changes. A late shot by Southwestern in the final minute was the difference as the home team won by a score of 72-71.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The game was close from beginning to end, with neither team leading by more than seven points at any time.
Kalib Thomas gave the Colonels their first lead with an early three-pointer. Another three by
Graham Krezmien put Centre up 12-10 with six minutes gone by.
- The two teams continued to trade the lead back and forth for the rest of the half. Five straight points by
Landen Hamilton put Centre up 32-29, but the Pirates outscored Centre 13-3 over the next five minutes to take the biggest lead by any team at 42-35. A layup by
Nolan Wahl cut the deficit to 42-37 at the halftime break.
- Centre's backcourt duo of Thomas and Hamilton came out strong to open the second half, scoring five quick points to erase the Southwestern advantage. From there, both teams continued to trade blows, swapping the lead before Southwestern went up 62-56.
- Facing their longest deficit of the second half, the Colonels went on a tear, outscoring the Pirates 12-2 as Hamilton and Wahl connected on threes and
Garrison Hildebrant tipped in a Centre miss to give the Colonels a 68-64 lead with three minutes left.
- The Centre lead was 71-69 as both teams failed to capitalize on scoring chances from the field and the free throw line in the final minutes. Finally, the Pirates connected on a three-pointer with 16 seconds left and Centre's final shot was offline.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hamilton led all players with 25 points. Thomas was the only other Centre player to score in double figures, finishing with 16.
- The Colonels outrebounded the Pirates 46-39, led by game highs of nine from
Ryan Shene and
Johnny Djema.
