Greencastle, IN – At first it seemed it would be a close one, but in the end, Centre falls to DePauw 13-9
The period opened with quick scoring from DePauw when Katie Jauchius found the net twice in the span of a minute to put the Tigers up 2-0 early. Centre struggled to generate offense, with DePauw extending the lead with a free position goal by Kate Leone, followed by another goal from Mary Mason to make it 4-0.
Straight out of a timeout, Centre adjusted and started to rally late as
Gracie Garner put the Colonels on the board and later added another goal off an assist from
Mary Sterling Anderton.
Colonels continue with momentum as they capitalized on free-position opportunities, as
Sophia Richardson scored twice, to tie the game 4-4 heading into the second period.
Centre and DePauw created a back-and-forth battle in the second period.
The period opened with several defensive stops and penalties on DePauw, including two yellow cards that gave Centre the man advantage for a brief time, despite the opportunities Colonels struggled to convert until
Riley Jackson broke the tie midway through, giving Centre their first lead of the game.
It didn't take long for the Tigers to respond as Kate Sullivan found the net to tie the game up, which began the back-and-forth as Centre's
Gracie Garner scored to take the lead again.
Heading into halftime, Depauw was able to close on a scoring surge as Katie Leone tied the game and Emerson Perea scored to give the Tigers the lead 7-6.
Tigers came out of the half with a Dominant offensive pressure as they opened scoring behind a goal by Sullivan, and later Kai Coffee added on with a converted free position shot to make the lead 9-6
Centre answered behind a goal by Garner, cutting into the deficit to put the colonels back in it. DePauw responded again when Sullivan found the net, restoring a three-goal cushion.
Colonels managed to head into the fourth only down by 2, with
Sophia Richardson capitalizing on a free-position opportunity to put the score at 10-8.
Centre had opportunities early in the fourth, but Goalie Namh Callahan kept the Colonels off the board. DePauw extended the lead further with two quick goals midway into the quarter.
After the Centre continued to put pressure on the tigers but was unable to convert, DePauw added another goal to keep the momentum from shifting.
Sophia Richardson was able to break through late, finding the net off an assist from
Audrey Haines, but a final cave from Callahan allowed DePauw to secure the win.
The Colonels are back home as they start Conference play against Sewanee on March 21
st.
