Jackson, MS - After a solid start on a long homestand to start the 2026 season, Centre Softball took to the road for the first time on Saturday. The Colonels also kicked off SAA play with a doubleheader against Millsaps. The Majors got the best of Centre by sweeping the day. Here is how it shook out:
Game 1: Millsaps 13, Centre 0 (5 innings)
Sophia Lay got the ball to start the series for the Colonels. She worked around a HBP in the bottom of the 1st to retire the side in order.
Emily Lammers led off the top of 2 with a single to left and went to second on a passed ball. She would be stranded there as the Colonels went down 3 straight to retire the side.
The Majors then got to Lay in the bottom of the 2nd. Four straight singles put two runs on the board. The next batter stepped in and launched a 3-run homer to left for a 5-0 lead and the end of Lay's day in the circle.
Katherine Weller came on and sat down the next 3 to limit the damage.
Centre had a chance to get something back in the top of the 3rd but stranded runners on the corners. Millsaps again took advantage in the bottom of the inning and blew the game open. The Majors put the first 5 runners on base, scoring twice, and knocking Weller from the game.
Kennedy Caudill came on but also struggled. Millsaps would go on to score 8 total runs in the inning to take a 13-0 lead.
The Colonels stranded 2 runners in the 5th in an effort to keep the game going as Millsaps won via the run rule.
Sophia Lay took the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season.
Game 2: Millsaps 4, Centre 0
Ashley Howard got the start for Centre in the second half of the doubleheader. She worked around a walk and fielder's choice in the bottom of the 1st to strand both runners and keep Millsaps off the board. She kept it going with perfect innings in the 2nd and 3rd. The challenge for Centre was coming up with anything on offense as the Colonels went down in order in each of the first four innings.
The Majors broke through in the 4th. The first three batters reached base with the lead scoring to put Millsaps up 1-0. A fielder's choice and error followed for a 2-0 lead. A base hit and another error led to two more runs as Millsaps grabbed a 4-0 lead going to the 5th. Howard kept fighting and pitched perfect 5th and 6th innings.
Centre would only manage a 7th inning walk from
Brinley Muller as Millsaps was able to complete the sweep with a no-hitter.
Ashley Howard (2-2) took a tough loss. The right-hander threw 6 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 earned run on 83 pitches.
The Colonels will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday starting at 1:00pm.
