Danville, KY - Centre Softball continued showing its progress and promise on Saturday as the Colonels were able to take the opener against Trinity. The Tigers bounced back for the split in game 2.
Game 1 - Centre 5, Trinity 2
Sophia Lay got the start for the Colonels against Trinity's high-powered attack. The Tigers put pressure on with a 1-out double. A hit batter followed to put 2 on, but Lay was able to hold strong with a fly out and grounder to end the threat. She was gifted a lead in the bottom of the inning.
Layne Ogle singled with 1 out and moved to 2nd on a grounder.
Rylee Sandifer then laced a single to left center to put the Colonels up, 1-0, after 1.
Trinity put 2 more runners on in the top of the 2nd with 1 out again. A sac bunt brought the 2nd out but put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Lay stayed poised and struck out the next batter looking to keep the lead. Centre kept its own pressure on in the bottom of the 3rd.
Madison Skibo and
Brinley Muller reached base to start. Two batters later,
Emily Lammers was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. Sandifer stepped up and delivered again with a double to the wall in left. Skibo and Muller scored to give the Colonels a 3-0 lead and force a Trinity pitching change. Two strikeouts followed to limit the damage for Trinity.
Lay cruised through a 1-2-3 4th and was again rewarded by the bats in the bottom half. With 2 out and Skibo and Muller back on base,
Layne Ogle had her turn to deliver a clutch double to score both runners and give Centre a 5-0 lead going to the 5th. Trinity got a run back in the 5th with a 1-out solo homer.
The Tigers gave the Colonels a real sweat in the top of the 7th. With 1 out, the Tigers loaded the bases. A fielder's choice at third brought a run home to cut the Centre lead to 5-2. The next batter launched a ball to left that initally looked like serious trouble, but
Emily Lammers was able to track the ball to the edge of the wall and grab it to secure Centre's 16th win of the season.
Sophia Lay held on for the complete game win as the Colonels officially quadrupled its 2025 win total.
Game 2 - Trinity 10, Centre 2
Centre used the momentum of the opener and grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd of game 2. With 1 out and
Kennedy Caudill on 1st,
Cheney Floyd got out in front of a change-up and sent it to the wall in left for a double to send Caudill to 3rd.
Regan Brownley followed and drew an 11-pitch walk. The final pitch was mishandled by the Trinity catcher. Caudill read the ball perfectly and immediately dashed home for the run.
Trinity responded in a loud way in the top of the 3rd. After the leadoff batter grounded out, Trinity went double-double-double-single-single to score 3 runs, take the lead, and end
Ashley Howard's start. Caudill moved to pitcher and struggled with early command. A 4-pitch walk and a passed ball pushed a 4th run home. After another walk and strikeout, Caudill struck out the would-be 3rd out, but the strike was mishandled by
Juliana Aragon behind the plate. The runner reached as another run scored. An infield single then followed to score 2 more runs to cap a 7-run inning and completely flip the game.
The Colonels got one back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a 2-out single from
Emily Lammers and a following triple from
Rylee Sandifer, but it was all Centre mustered the rest of the day. Trinity would go on to score 3 more runs in the top of the 6th for the 10-2 lead. Centre stranded two runners on in the bottom of the inning that would have extended the game, but it was not meant to be.
The teams will settle the series in Centre's 2026 finale on Sunday morning at 10:00am.
