Danville, KY - Coming off the two most thrilling wins in recent memory, Centre Softball looked for a sweep of #14 Berry on Sunday. The Vikings had other ideas and came away with a 10-1 win.
Kennedy Caudill got the ball a day after firing 183 pitches in the opening win over Berry on Saturday. Today was not her day in the circle. A single and 2 walks loaded the bases for Berry in the top of the 1st. After leaving the bags loaded 3 times against Caudill on Saturday, Berry took advantage this time as a 2-out single scored 2 to give Berry the lead after 1.
Things got worse for Centre in the top of the 2nd. With 1 out, a single to right was misplayed, allowing the runner to get all the way to 3rd. Another error on the next at-bat pushed the runner home for a 3-0 Vikings lead. After a ground out put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, Centre committed 3 more errors on back-to-back plays. Berry took advantage as they scored 4 runs in the inning to take a 6-0 lead. Caudill helped her own cause in the bottom of the 2nd as she singled home
Rylee Sandifer, who had reached after a Berry error, making the score 6-1.
The Vikings kept attacking in the top of the 3rd. After an RBI ground out, Berry had a 7-1 lead and ended Caudill's day in the circle.
Katherine Weller came on and worked around 2 walks to limit the damage. Centre had a chance to get back in the game in the bottom half. With 1 out, the Colonels got consecutive singles from
Baylee Estes and
Brinley Muller. Two batters later,
Emily Lammers drew a walk to load the bases. All three would be stranded after
Rylee Sandifer hit a sharp liner to center that was snagged out of the air to retire the side.
Berry added two more runs in the top of the 5th for a 10-1 lead. Centre again had a chance to extend the game but left two runners on as the game ended via the run rule.
Kennedy Caudill suffered her third loss of the season as Centre's 6-game win streak came to a close.
The Colonels are still in prime position to make the SAA Tournament but will need road wins to do it. Centre starts a 6-game road swing with a series at Southwestern, starting next Saturday.
