Memphis, TN - Centre Softball dropped the series finale at Rhodes on Sunday with an 8-0 loss to complete a Lynx series sweep.
Sophia Lay got the ball for the finale for the Colonels. Rhodes grabbed a 1st inning lead thanks to a sacrifice fly. Centre looked for the answer in the top of the 2nd.
Layne Ogle led off with a four-pitch walk. With 2 out,
Morgan Tabor singled to left to put two runners on. The issue that hurt the Colonels on Saturday came up again as both were stranded and Rhodes kept the lead.
Rhodes tried to extend its lead in the bottom of the 2nd. With 2 out, Rhodes singled and drew a walk to load the bases. Lay was able to draw a ground ball to short to retire the side on a force and leave the Lynx bases full.
Madison Skibo led off the 3rd with a single but Centre could do no more in the inning. Rhodes put 2 on in the bottom of 3, but Lay was again able to get out of it as Centre trailed 1-0 going to the 4th.
After Centre went 1-2-3 in the top of the inning, Rhodes extended its lead in the bottom half. The first four Lynx reached with a run scoring for a 2-0 lead. After a fly out, Rhodes put two more on the board via a single to center. The 4-0 lead spelled the end of the day for Lay in the circle.
Katherine Weller came on in relief and got out of the jam with a fielder's choice and line out to leave two more potential runs stranded.
Rhodes added two more in the 5th and 6th innings to win the game after 6 via the run rule. With the loss, Centre is eliminated from SAA Tournament contention. The Colonels will look to finish out the season on a high note with a 3-game home series against Trinity. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1:00pm at the Centre Softball Field.
