University Heights, OH – Centre traveled to John Carroll University for their first road game of the season, ultimately falling in an overtime shootout, 1-0.
The game opened with early fouls on both sides as neither team was able to find much offensive rhythm.
John Carroll began to create opportunities midway through the quarter, but Centre's defense held strong to keep the game scoreless heading into the second, tied 0-0.
The second period carried on with a physical battle, as both team traded fouls and struggled to generate offensive pressure. John Carroll recorded a pair of shots in the period, but both went wide of the cage.
Centre was able to find to generate some offensive pressure late in the period, with a shot on goal from
Taylor Fuqua, however Blue Streaks goalie Ellison Hilgendorf held strong, to Keep the game scoreless as the teams headed into halftime tied 0-0.
The Colonels opened the second half with a stream of penalty corners and shots on goal, building offensive momentum but were unable to convert.Both teams traded fouls mid-way through before John Carroll flipped the offensive pressure, generating penalty corners and shots on goal of their own, however Goalie
Eliza Hensley held strong to keep the Blue Streaks off the board, as the game remained tied, heading into the fourth.
The Colonels and Blue Streaks continued a tightly contested battle in the fourth period, with both teams looking for the breakthrough. John Caroll created early opportunites, but Hensley came up with back-to-back saves to keep the blue streaks off the board.
Centre answered with a penalty corner midway through, followed by a shot from
Taylor Fuqua. John Caroll continued to apply pressure, but Hensely stood strong once again, making another save to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Colonels created opportunities to take the win, as
Olivia Vonderheide recorded back-to-back shots on goal, both which saved by goalie Hilgendorf. Fuqua added another shot late, but it was not enough to get through as regulation time ran out, with the score still 0-0.
After four scoreless quarters, both teams headed into overtime still searching for the game winning goal. Centre came out attacking, with
Lola Florea and
Olivia Vonderheide each recording shots on goal, but Blue Streaks goalie turned both away.
Colonels continued to add pressure, earning a penalty corner midway through, Vonderheide followed with a shot that went high before adding another shot on goal, but Hilgendorf once again holding on to keep it scoreless.
John Carroll had a late opportunity with a penalty corner, but Sophia Schultheis' ensuring shot went wide. Both team could not break through as a scoring overtime 1 leads to another quarter of overtime.
The second overtime, started with Kierra Maxie trying to push one through for the Blue Streaks, but Colonel goalie Hensley held strong. The Offensive pressure shifted as
Abbie Woolley had multiple shots on goal, followed by
Taylor Fuqua late in the period, but goalie Hilgendorf held strong to send the game into shootouts.
The Shootout got started with both sides missing their first two attempts, Centre was able to break through with a successful attempt by
Taylor Fuqua, but John Caroll answered with a made attempt of their own to keep the shootout even.
The Colonels faced an unfortunate loss in the final three attempts, as they were unable to convert any of their attempts while the Blue Streaks found the back of the cage on their attempts, claiming the 1-0 shootout victory.
Colonels are not done as they travel to play Wooster 09/13 at 12 pm.
