Declan Miller's spectacular 10-save night was not enough as Centre dropped a mid-week matchup to Hanover, 2-0, at Amend Field on Tuesday night.
Centre had the first try on goal on the night.
Jafet Figueroa, making his first start of the year, fired one on in the 2nd minute, but was turned away. Hanover then began asserting control over the ball and field position. On a play from the corner, the Panthers were able to float a header by Miller in goal to grab the lead in the 10th minute. They tried for a second in both the 19th and 21st minutes, but Miller was there to deny on both accounts. Centre's offense struggled to build consistent approaches. The next try came on the foot of
Daniel Jackson in the 29th minute but was not on target. Miller came up with saves again in the 42nd and 43rd minutes, but on the latter, the Panther striker was able to reclaim possession and dribble around the Centre D for a tap-in goal to double the lead going to halftime.
Even with the lead, Hanover continued to attack as it pressed Miller into making six saves in the final 45 minutes, none of which were the garden variety.
Tyler Smith and
Ethan Cajuste both had chances in the 53rd and 57th minutes but could not find the proper angle around the Hanover keeper. Cajuste's try would ultimately prove the final of the night as the Colonels suffered their third loss of the year.
In total, Hanover outshot Centre, 14-6, including 12-4 on goal, despite only a single corner kick all night long.
The Colonels now get set for a trip west to battle WashU on Saturday with kickoff set for 2:00pm ET.
