GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Centre Colonels traveled to Ohio to take on Denison but ultimately fell, 3-0.
The game opened with the Colonels' defense being tested early as Denison applied offensive pressure, earning a penalty corner and putting a shot on goal that went wide. Denison broke through when Reilly Desmond found the back of the net off assists from Maddie Gaines and Emma Gebhart.
Centre kept the deficit to one as goalkeeper Eliza Hensley stood strong in goal, making four saves to close the quarter with Denison leading 1-0.
Denison carried its offensive pressure into the second quarter, earning a pair of penalty corners and sending a shot high before Lulu Keil found the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0. Hensley continued to be tested, making two more saves before halftime to keep the Colonels within striking distance.
Coming out of the half, Centre's defense continued to battle as Denison earned a penalty stroke, which Maggie Lamb converted to make it 3-0. The third quarter remained tightly contested, with Denison recording just one additional penalty corner and shot. Hensley continued to stand strong in goal, sending the game to the fourth quarter with the score at 3-0.
The Colonels came out of the fourth quarter with early offensive pressure, highlighted by a shot from Hannah Miller that was saved by Denison goalkeeper Therese Lucian.
Late in the period, both teams traded shots as Centre looked to mount a comeback while Denison worked to secure the victory. Both goalkeepers made key saves, however, as neither team was able to find the back of the net and Denison secured the 3-0 win.
The Colonels will travel to Sewanee for their first conference matchup of the season.
