Centre football punches ticket to NCAA Playoffs

11/19/2024 2:00:00 PM

DANVILLE, Ky. - For the fourth time in program history, Centre College is headed to the NCAA Division III football playoffs.

Centre completed an 8-2 regular season this past weekend with a 35-8 victory over Sewanee on Saturday, putting the Colonels in a three-way tie for the Southern Athletic Association title. It is Centre's first conference title in football since the 2018 season, which is also the last year that the Colonels qualified for the NCAA Playoffs.

The Colonels led the SAA in passing offense in 2024 behind quarterback Jack Gohmann and a talented corps of receivers, and featured a devastating pass rush on defense that racked up a league high 30 quarterback sacks. Centre went 2-1 against NCAA Playoff teams this season. The Colonels knocked off Trinity 24-12 on Homecoming Saturday and were the only team to defeat Collegiate Conference of the South champion Maryville all year, winning 17-14 on Sept. 14 on a Cam Tegge field goal at the buzzer.

Centre will be traveling to Pittsburgh to take on no. 15 Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 30. The Tartans were tri-champions of the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The game will be live streamed on ESPN+.
