Golfweek October Classic Day 1 Recap

DESTIN, Fla. - The Centre women's golf team headed south to compete in one of their final tournaments of the fall against some of the top teams in the conference as they played the first of three rounds at the Golfweek October Classic. With 36 holes left to play the Colonels sit in 18th place.

Centre finished with a combined team score of 327 on a day none of the 24 teams in the loaded field shot a combined score lower than 300. The Colonels finished one shot back of Sewanee and Wisconsin-Whitewater, two back of LeTourneau and four back of Illinois Wesleyan.

Individually, rookie Yelena Williams was the low scorer of the opening session for Centre as she finished with a score of 77, including three birdies for a team high for the opening round. Williams's score was good enough to crack the individual top 25.

First-year Ceci Coccia posted a round of 79, followed by senior Janie Morgan with a score of 85.

Nithya Nunna and Grace Vernon posted respective scores of 86 and 88 to wrap up Centre's team totals for the first round, with Nunna making birdie on the par 4 second hole and Vernon making birdie on the par 4 eighth.
