DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - The Centre men's golf team played the first 36 holes of the West Pines Collegiate hosted by Oglethorpe. After a rough opening round, the Colonels played much better on their second trip through the course to move five spots up the leaderboard from 14th into a tie for ninth.
Centre began the day with a score of 301 in the opening round, but followed that up with a 14-stroke improvement in the afternoon, posting a score of 287 to tie with McDaniel. The Colonels sit three shots back of Hampden-Sydney, five shots back of Averett and one shot ahead of Greensboro on a leaderboard that saw plenty of movement through 36 holes.
Individually, the top score for the first two rounds belonged to
Peyton Toon, as the freshman was three over for the day after a 36-hole score of 144. Toon shot even par in the opening round with a score of 71 and the highlight of his second round 74 was a pair of birdies on the opening two holes. Toon currently sits in 20th place with one round left to play.
Jack Butts was five over for the day after rounds of 76 and 72 to finish at 148. In the second round, Butts fired an eagle on the par 5 17th hole and then birdied his final hole of the day to close strong at 72.
Harrison Akers and
Charlie Reber each sit at 149 after the first two rounds. Akers also came through with an eagle on the 17th hole in his opening round and then birdied two of the final three holes in the second round to shoot an even par 71.
After posting a score of 78 to open the tournament, Reber had the best individual round by any Centre player in round 2 as he shot one under par at 70, including birdies on his first two holes and three consecutive birdies on the back nine to rebound from a tough turn.
Andrew Mainka posted scores of 80 and 81 to cap off Centre's counted totals for a 36-hole score of 161.
Ben Bevington entered as an individual and fired a 36-hole score of 150 after posting scores of 74 and 76.
